Notable Policy Effective 2/1: Mandate Government Transportation Use

As of February 1, 2017, the Joint Travel Regulations permits travelers to be directed to use Government transportation (i.e., Patriot Express/Category B AMC-type transportation) when reasonably available to meet mission requirements. Further, it gives authority to withhold transportation cost reimbursement when a traveler who is directed to use Government transportation (except a Government-furnished automobile) fails to do so for personal reasons. Dependents of both civilian employees and Service members can only be directed to use Patriot Express/Category B AMC-type transportation.

The authorizing/order issuing official must determine 'reasonable availability' after considering mission requirements, frequency and scheduling of flights, and other relevant circumstances (including those personal to the traveler) that effect scheduling.
